Katie Forrest has been with Dakota Hotels for nine years and worked across a variety of departments throughout her career there. “Something I’ve always loved about the company is the energy they put into growing our talent,” she said. “There’s a big focus on internal promotions, and making sure that we have the talent pipeline we need.” Recently, Katie moved into a role focusing on talent at the company, and in this role looks after all learning and development, as well as internal and external engagement. “You could say I’m an influencer for Dakota!” she shared with a laugh. This involves her spending a lot of time talking about what it’s like to work at the company. “I’m very much people-focused in my role, which is why I want to be involved in our technology projects. I wanted to make sure our teams felt very involved from the start. It’s really important to get buy-in for any change, and especially important for big technology projects.”

Trent Freeman had a challenge. His hotels had topped the charts of guest satisfaction. “That’s a very difficult place to sustain,” he told us. In this case study, we’re going to dive into how he got there, the challenges of maintaining consistent excellence, and how he overcame them through listening to guests through technology and motivating his team. First, a bit of context. Trent is the Corporate Director of Operations Development and Quality Assurance, Valencia Hotel Group. Based in Houston, Texas, Valencia Hotel Group is a hotel management company specializing in the development and operation of full-service luxury hotels. Named a leading hotel developer, owner, and operator by Smith Travel Research, they consistently deliver profit generation rankings in the top tier of all U.S. full-service hotels. Valencia Hotel Group is also a preferred resource for development and property management services for upscale hotels owned by third parties. A unique aspect of Valencia’s properties is a focus on creating a local, outdoor experience with large courtyards, frequent live music, and fire pits in the evening. “We’re taking that experience and making it a luxury experience at the same time,” Trent told us. “Our aim is to give people a reason to travel because staying in our hotels is an experience in itself. It’s very unlike the thousands of other options out there, where you wake up in the morning and may forget what city you're in. It's pretty hard to do that in our hotels!” Valencia Hotels have won Traveler’s Choice Awards and consistently achieves customer satisfaction ratings above the 90th percentile. But therein was the challenge.

Infrasys Cloud POS, a Shiji Group Brand, delivers a cloud-based point-of-sale designed for enterprise hotel operations. With over two decades of building POS systems for the hospitality industry, Infrasys is one of the most versatile and efficient systems on the market and has over 7,000 installations today.

Since August of 2017, Shiji’s Point-of-Sale (POS) product support team has been working on upgrading Starbucks’s POS software system in over 3,000 stores in China. The project covers software in Starbucks’s many stores across the country and includes providing all-weather technical support for POS products in the company’s headquarters and individual stores. Due to the successful partnership between Starbucks and Shiji, the upgraded software system is running smoothly, in alignment with Shiji’s corporate mission to provide its customers with the best service possible. Since Starbucks entered China in January of 1999, according to their statistics, Starbucks has more than 3,600 stores in over 150 cities across China. System changes are critical to businesses and our goal is to make them as smooth as possible for staff and customers.
